SHOPPING MALLS - PSOS

PDF Print E-mail

From a security standpoint, a shopping mall is ultimately a gathering area for persons, and includes all of the dangers and threats associated with them.

Today, complete access control of all people entering and exiting a site is a foremost security concern. This includes the monitoring of vendors, suppliers, guests, clients, maintenance personnel, and any other individuals who wish to enter a specified area.

A shopping mall's risk-analysis and security plan must include all of the potential threats to that area. On the day-to-day level, the most common threats come from clients, employees and suppliers. Potential terrorist or criminal acts pose a threat whose impact on human and material loss could be enormous.

The security plan should, above all else, take into consideration the protection of facilities and locations surrounding the center, including entrances by foot and car.

A shopping mall's security system must be based on five fundamental points:

* A preventative intelligence infrastructure
* Advanced technological means
* Security procedures
* Professionally trained personnel
* Inspections, supervisions and exercises/simulations

Security personnel tend to be contracted from external companies. International experience following events and failures suggests that security companies with the greatest demand are those that implement resources to train and prepare the human factor beyond basic security training mandated by law.

Well trained staff can prevent attacks and losses whose value greatly exceeds the investment in the security services themselves. Personnel professionalism includes training, retraining, motivation, and frequent simulations combined with regular supervision.

The most effective way to prevent a potential threat from manifesting into a real event is to carry out frequent exercises and simulations, followed by a summary and drawing of conclusions as part of regular training.
