PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION - PSOS

PDF Print E-mail

Public transportation is one of the main systems of urban and inter-city transport.  The quantity of persons who depend on these systems, who occupy stations, train cars and bus seats in concentrated areas and across distances, makes public transportation an infrastructure whose security is critical.

A terrorist attack is perhaps the greatest threat facing the public transportation industry.  The concentration of people in a closed space, the enormous international media repercussions, and the psychological and economic consequences of a potential attack all make public transportation an ideal target for extremist terrorist groups.

In order to harm victims of catastrophic numbers, terrorist groups need not rely solely on explosive materials.  Their goals, for example, can be achieved by derailing a train or metro, or forcing control of the wheel of a bus to drive it off course over a guardrail.

In addition to terrorism, the public transportation industry must deal with other threats such as robberies, violence and vandalism.

Public transportation security plans must respond to these various threats, taking into account the nature and logistics of stations, different systems, and the actual means of transportation.

The security concept should be based on preventative intelligence, deterrence, and especially prevention.  Some tools that support the security concept include recognizing suspicious body language of commuters, modern technological means, and undercover activity.  Hence, the human factor, related both directly and indirectly to security, must be alert and professionally trained to react in the public transportation industry.
